When I was a young girl, I saw my next-door neighbor, Tommy, sitting on Sorry I’m Late My Beagle Was Sitting On Me Shirt his porch stoop crying, and saying to his little daughter who was about 3 years old, as he held her on his lap, “Who’s going to take care of you now?” My mother told me that he found out he had stomach cancer and there was no hope for him. He was in his forties. The other sad part was that Lynny, his daughter, was severely retarded and disabled. She had a mother and three other brothers and sisters. My mother also told me she was known as a “change of life baby” meaning her parents were rather old at the time, in their forties, when they had her. Her Mom was being treated for a tumor when “she” was actually the tumor. He died within a short amount of time. My mother babysat for Lynny when the family went to the funeral.
I remember her holding Lynny who was four then, in Sorry I’m Late My Beagle Was Sitting On Me Shirt her arms in the yard between our two yards and my Mom was crying hard saying, “Oh Lynny you poor thing, you poor thing”. Lenny could not still walk yet and was nonverbal always except for a few words as time went on. I will never forget how deeply sad this was, especially because of the intimacy I witnessed and the depth of love and acceptance he had for his little girl who looked and was so very different than anyone I had ever met. I always wished I could change that story.
