Back to where I was but married, two little children, I was the My spirit plant shirt sole breadwinner and my spouse never work during our 22-year marriage. I did “earn” a G.I. Bill benefit from a reduced mortgage plan and bought my first house. Then I decided that this GI Bill “thing“ had other “bennies” that benefitted every G.I. I enrolled in night school to earn a college degree. Uncle Sam paid for this since I was in the military. Did I mention that I signed on whilst my fellow classmates and my peers across America were being slaughtered; 56,000 of my peers died. I earned no medals. I gave back as much as I received.
I was called to the principal’s office and My spirit plant shirt immediately started sweating. I wasn’t in any trouble that I knew of and this was the first time I had ever been called to the office. The lady at the front desk directed me to another lady at a desk toward the back of the office. I told her who I was and she pulled out a folder and said to me “I’ve been looking through your folder and I just wanted to say that I think you could do just about anything you want to do.” That’s all I remember her saying. I wish I remembered her name. The encouragement she gave me and to no telling how many other students was the example I referred to earlier. 55 or so years later, I taught high school students for a couple of years. I’m still subbing some. I hope I’ve encouraged someone like that lady encouraged me.
